At the turn of the 19/20th Century golf had became a very popular game and the absence of a golf course in Scarborough was to the disadvantage of the town. A company was formed with Directors and Members to create the Golf Course on land rented from Scarborough Corporation.
In those days it was quite normal for a course to be developed in a few months and our course was no exception. After 8 months the first game was played. Today one hole would probably take that amount of time to create. The official opening of the Pavilion and Links, as it was known then, was on the 5th August 1903 by Lady Londesborough.
From the outset there were financial problems to overcome and by the end of the First World War membership and finances were so low that the Club was taken over by a new company. They raised money by various means and obtained a lease from Scarborough Council for new land to rebuild the course. They appointed a Leeds company as architects headed up by Dr. Alister MacKenzie who eventually became a Director of the club. On Friday 20th May 1921 the new course was opened. Today the course has had some changes because of cliff top erosion and changes to Filey Road but remains very true to the original design.
This is a very abridged version of the history of our club and if you would like to read the full version please select "Next" below or step through the time cycles shown on the right hand column. The history is due to the late Harry Atkinson a former secretary of our golf club who wanted a written account of the Club History. When Harry died, Jack Oakes a past Captain took this information and spent uncountable hours sifting through minutes of meetings to add and embellish the details. The Golf Club wish to place on record their gratitude to Jack for what he achieved. Similarly, to Gloria Pickering for all the information she collated on the history of the Ladies' Section.
